Peterhead is known locally as ‘The Bloo Toon’ and it’s 17,000+ inhabitants known as Bloo Tooners or Bloomogganners.
The town dates back to the 1500′s and since construction of it’s first harbour in 1593 has been a fishing port. The fishing industry is in steady decline but still over £60m of fish is landed at Peterhead each year. The harbour also supports the offshore oil and gas industry with support vessels frequently berthed and the occasional visit from jack-up rigs.
Peterhead’s annual Scottish Week is a large week-long event, held in the 3rd week of July each year, attracting big crowds and often featuring events of note including displays from the Red Arrows.
To the North of Peterhead are long stretches of sandy beaches stretching to Fraserburgh, passing the St Fergus gas terminal on the way. To the South of the town the coastline is rocky with prominent cliffs.
